lyrics

If you’ve been to Tularosa on the Day of the Dead
You’ve seen how a sleepy town can come alive
Suddenly the streets are filled with waltzes
All at once the pretty girls arrive

The whole damn town’s a ballroom, adorned with colored lights
And couples slowly dancing round and round
I came here looking for that gold that lies just beneath the dirt
But heartache in a skirt is what I found

***
Oh Maria
I waited for you through the night so long
Oh Maria
You are the two-faced kind and you had it in mind
to forsake me all along

***
Two steps forward and three steps back, that’s the way we danced
Fancy footwork going nowhere fast
I took a job, I got a hacienda, I took a chance
that romance in Tularosa could last

Yes, it’s true I failed to see his shadow
My eyes were fixed on stars in the desert sky
By the cottonwood tree you said to me
you’d been with him all the while
A crooked smile played on your lips as you said goodbye

***
Oh Maria
I waited for you through the night so long
Oh Maria
You are the two-faced kind and you had it in mind
to forsake me all along

***
One thing you can say for those storm clouds
You can ‘em building up before they spill
Warning signs are all around us
All the world can see when destiny gets dressed up fit to kill

***
Oh Maria
I waited for you through the night so long
Oh Maria
You are the two-faced kind and you had it in mind
to forsake me all along
